Head of School Message

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School is a school that celebrates strength in community and where education is an extension of the home. We share in a reciprocal partnership with parents based on an ethical and spiritual foundation. We are a welcoming environment grounded on traditions and full of love, care, and respect for one another. We seek to develop each child’s natural curiosity into a lifelong ability to think critically and creatively and to love the experience of learning. Entrenched within our academic program is a nurturing of an individual’s self-worth and building of character.

Each month a value such as respect, generosity, or responsibility is presented to students in all facets of school life. Our students learn to appreciate these qualities in themselves and those around them. Our teachers work on promoting self-respect and respect for others, honoring the ongoing process of spiritual growth and discovery. Students flourish because understanding and caring adults are at their side, focused on their strengths and their achievements. Teachers value each child’s gifts and talents in a community atmosphere of trust and acceptance. In return, students are expected to put forth their best effort and to take responsibility for themselves, the broader community and to embrace the diverse background of each individual. At St. Stephen’s we want all who are involved collectively in the life of the school to be inspired and continually strive to be the best we can be.

Church and Day School Covenant

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School, serving PreK(3) to Grade 5, was founded by St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in 1958. The original intent of the Church in creating the School was to accommodate the educational needs of Church families. Over the years, the constituency of the School has changed, and the relationship between the School and the Church has evolved. The School is now a primary outreach of the Church into the broader community.

Through the School, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church touches the future. We educate children in a Christian community which provides not only academic excellence but also spiritual formation. As an Episcopal school, we draw from the foundations of the Anglican Church: Scripture, Tradition and Reason. We also firmly believe that “from everyone to whom much has been given much will be expected” (St. Luke 12:48). Therefore education at St. Stephen’s includes stewardship: that lifelong sense of responsibility to all of God’s creation by sharing material and intellectual gifts with others, and by caring for the earth as our home. As a primary outreach of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, our goal is to further develop the School community as one which reflects the diversity of the broader world. Toward that goal, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School is committed to reaching a goal of 10% (the Biblical tithe) of net tuition being designated yearly as financial aid in order to reach a broader section of the community. Recently, the Board of Trustees established a general school endowment fund which will create even more opportunities for the granting of financial aid.

The governance of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School is outlined in the By-Laws of both Church and School.
