Instilling a strong foundation for lifelong learning

Our library supports our readers and researchers. Students visit the school library weekly with their homeroom classes, and the library is open before and after school. The collection enriches the SSEDS curriculum and grows with our students’ reading interests. Formal library instruction highlights library use and research skills, literature appreciation, library related iPad apps, and web-based digital resources. Students read for both pleasure and information, so the librarian uses age appropriate activities such as special incentives, research projects, book talks, storytimes, music, and silent reading to spark that reading.

Our web-based catalog and 1:1 iPads give easy access to the digital and print collection on campus and from home. Every student from PK - Grade 5 has a library card on file. Upper-grade students (Grades 3-5) use individual online accounts with added features. Grades 1-5 participate in the web-based Accelerated Reader (AR) program and complete quizzes on computers or iPads in the classroom, learning lab, or library. AR practice quizzes are available for over 100,000 books which allow students to quiz on books from home, public library, and our library collections. Online subscriptions and e-books enhance the print collection.

The Library offers extended hours: 7:30 AM-3:30 PM (except Tuesdays). Students and parents visit the library before school to select and read books. After dismissal, students accompanied by parents or those with library passes in After Care are welcome.

The checkout period for books is two weeks with the option of renewal. Some reference materials and high demand items may have a shorter loan period. Especially concerning these items, we expect students to be responsible and considerate of the needs of others in their use of library materials.
