Instilling a strong foundation for lifelong learning

Senior K

EMBARKING ON A PERSONALIZED ACADEMIC JOURNEY

In Senior Kindergarten, children develop their identity as a student. Foundational curricular concepts are explored in an experiential manner with a strong emphasis on student choice. Phonological awareness (the ability to distinguish and manipulate word parts, a building block of reading) is further developed in Senior K.

Our loving teachers instill independence in these young students and prepare them for their academic journey. Students learn to advocate for themselves by asking for help when needed. Teachers scaffolded problem solving so that students are self-sufficient. The Senior Kindergarten teachers are aware and attentive to students’ needs, and their personalized involvement makes a lasting impact on lives of students.

In a holistic approach to educating each child, students learn life lessons, cultural awareness, become the best humans they can be. Teachers leverage small groups and peer learning to push each child to reach full academic potential.

It is a year full of special events! Each Fall, the students choose a saint to portray at our annual All Saints Day. During winter, a project-based learning activity involves an extensive study of animals that thrive in cold weather climates. Every December the classes are transported around the globe in a study of diverse holiday customs. A deep dive into an ocean unit culminates with students’ first school field trip to the Biscayne Nature Center. Thematic units combine crosscurricular concepts, incorporating math, social studies, reading and science. On the 100th day of school, Senior K students are transformed into elderly citizens that are 100 years old. They also create a vest with 100 items of their choice.

Reading comes to life through activities; difficult concepts are made playful. For example, each year the letters Q and U have a marriage ceremony (presided over by Pastor Jorge) to convey to the students that those letters always stick together.

This foundational year prepares students for continued academic success and sets a positive tone for their future academic career at St. Stephen’s and beyond.
