Leadership Opportunities

Leadership opportunities

St. Stephen’s offers students many unique opportunities to expand their leadership skills, and is a hallmark of our program. As our youngest students look up to their peers, they are instilled with a sense of pride and responsibility. We take advantage of opportunities to connect students across grade levels, cultivating relationships through bonding experiences. We live our motto by creating leaders to be “forces for good in the world”.

The Reading Buddies program pairs older students with younger across all grade levels. Buddies meet regularly to read and work on projects. The older students hone their writing skills as they craft a personal book for their young reading buddy. Students develop deep bonds with their buddies that last for years to come.

Our Grade 5 students have many leadership opportunities, including: serving as acolytes and safety patrols, as well as facilitating Family STEM Afternoon for the grade one and two students. Each week during chapel services, the fifth grade acolytes help to lead the service, including reading scripture. Our safety patrols greet students at arrival time and escort younger students to their classrooms. Additionally, safety patrols lead the pledges during Flag Salute. During Family STEM Afternoon, Grade 5 students run hands-on stations visited by Grade 1 students and their families.

Additionally, public speaking skills are honed through multiple exposures throughout their career at St. Stephen’s. Starting in Pre-K, students are invited to speak at Flag Salute to celebrate special occasions and accomplishments. Public speaking opportunities are numerous ranging from speech contests, plays and concerts.

At the end of the school year, we host the Alumni Pinning ceremony. Fifth grade graduates select an alumnus of their choice, often a sibling or reading buddy, to pin them during this service. The event concludes with our fifth graders passing the torch of leadership to our fourth graders.
