READ Program

The Reading Enrichment And Development (READ) Program at St. Stephen’s supports student learning by providing enrichment activities as well as skill development in the area of literacy.

Our department can help you coordinate educational testing as well as classroom accommodations when required or needed. The READ Program also promotes motivational reading activities that foster the love of reading through programs such as Read Across America and Reading Buddies.

Mercy Gonzalez is the Literacy Coach at St. Stephen's. She has been an educator for 27 years, 20 of which have been at St. Stephen's. She holds a Master's Degree in Reading Education and Florida Teaching Certificates in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Reading K-12 from the Florida Department of Education. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, and Wilson Reading System and belongs to the International Dyslexia Association and International Reading Association. Shirley Gonzalez is the Literacy Coach Assistant at St. Stephen’s. She taught in a Montessori classroom for 12 years. Shirley helps assess the children at the beginning of the year and works with those students that need extra help in a small group setting. She also works side by side with the Admission Department assessing prospective students. Shirley is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.
